Solomon Stoddard was minister of the First Church of Northampton, Massachusetts. He was regarded as one of the foremost early American religious thinkers, having brought an end to disciplinarian Puritanism in Massachusetts. He was the grandfather of Jonathan Edwards, who took over as the Church's minister in 1726. Stoddard died after 6 decades of service in 1729 at the age of 86.
